2022 WSOP Player of the Week 3: Shaun Deeb Runs Deep in Three Championship Events

Very few in the poker world have the hustle during the World Series of Poker (WSOP) that Shaun Deeb has, which is why Deeb is the latest PokerNews WSOP Player of the Week.

At the halfway point in the series, Deeb has cashed 11 events for a total of $311,064 in earnings. Three of those cashes have been from deep runs in $10,000 buy-in championship events in just the past seven days.

Relentless Dedication

Deeb’s dedication to the game has been widely documented over the years. The 2018 WSOP Player of the Year is known for playing a full schedule to always be on the hunt for another bracelet or POY sweat.

PokerNews recently captured Deeb taking his dedication to new heights by live multi-tabling two events at the WSOP, sprinting back and forth through the Bally’s Event Center to more literally sweat the POY race. Deeb’s hustle paid off as he ended up finishing eighth in the $3,000 6-Handed Limit Hold’em event for $11,980 and 64th in the $1,000 Flip & Go for $2,880.

On June 18, Deeb finished fifth in the $10,000 Seven Card Stud Hi-Lo 8 or Better Championship for $83,465, just four days after final tabling another high-roller in the $10,000 Limit 2-7 Lowball Triple Draw Championship, where he finished in fourth place for $94,606.

Deeb followed his fifth-place finish in the Stud Hi-Lo Championship with a deep run in Online Event #4: $1,000 PLO 6-Max the very next day, managing to finish in 20th place $3,992. The following day, Deeb found a 19th-place finish in the $10,000 H.O.R.S.E. Championship for $20,193, his third cash in a high-roller championship event in a week.

“Slowly I’ve been building up,” Deeb told PokerNews earlier this week. “I have two final tables this week in $10ks, some stuff had happened in them but I’m happy to get a bunch of deep runs. I have a shot at POY now.”

But Deeb doesn’t credit his recent WSOP success on hard work or dedication, but rather a bedazzled “lucky” hat he recently bought off of a fellow player.

“The hat is definitely working,” he said. “I had left the hat in someone’s car, they got COVID, so I waited a week to get the hat back. So yeah, it was a week without the hat and it was weird, I didn’t make any final tables. I got the hat back during the Triple Draw final table, and then I go to final table the Stud 8 … it’s definitely not what’s underneath the hat!”

Deeb’s 11 cashes so far at this year’s World Series have earned him $311,064 in earnings, not too shabby for a month’s work. Deeb currently sits in eighth place on the POY leaderboard with 1,824 points.

Daniel Zack: Daniel Zack won his third bracelet earlier this week by taking down Event #40: $10,000 Seven Card Stud Hi-Lo 8 or Better Championship for $324,174, less than two weeks after winning his second bracelet and $440,757 in Event #15: $10,000 Omaha Hi-Lo 8 or Better Championship.

Zack, who currently sits first in the WSOP POY race, also made a deep run this week in Event #46: $5,000 6-Handed No-Limit Hold’em, finishing in 90th place for $8,807.

Brian Hastings: Brian Hastings joined the prestigious list of six-time bracelet winners this week when he took down Event #31: $10,000 Limit 2-7 Lowball Triple Draw Championship for $292,146. Hastings became the ninth player to have six bracelets on their resume, among the likes of Daniel Negreanu, T.J. Cloutier and Chris Ferguson.

Later in the week, Hastings found a seventh-place finish in Event #40: $10,000 Seven Card Stud Hi-Lo 8 or Better Championship worth $49,571.
